Once Bitten, Twice Shy

Local News

One man has been arrested after he bit a Vernon police officer in the leg this past Saturday.

RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk says officers were dealing with an intoxicated and unruly man from a downtown club this past Saturday when the incident occurred.

“As the officers were trying to get this violent male to exit the police vehicle at the office, the suspect became very resistant and during that exchange, the individual bit our officer in the leg,” he says.

Police are also concerned about a second occurrence which took place this past Thursday in the Enderby area.

“Our officers were called to assist the Ambulance personnel in dealing with a person with mental health issues,” he says.

The man spit in the face and eyes of both the ambulance personnel and the police. The concern, Molendyk says, is communicable diseases.

Both ambulance staff and the officer were taken to hospital for medical attention following the episode.

“Over the past four days two police officers have been sent to the hospital for treatment,” says Molendyk.

The 26 year old associated with biting the officer is expected to appear in court to answer to charges of assault of a police officer.

Increasingly, our police and paramedics are affected by people with mental illnesses who should be under care, but aren't.

We can blame the B.C. government for that...and we will.
