Phantom Foodie Visits...Kelly O'Bryans

2798823625_0f18cd85de_zThe atmosphere of an old English Pub is often very casual to many and I like the tall seated booths that are available as it can offer a very intimate mood as you can forget anyone else is around. The last server I had was very friendly and excited about his job. It was refreshing to have his energy for the night. My usual order from Kelly O's is the Pachos, their version of french fries baked with cheese and a fabulous dipping sauce, if you have never been here then I would recommend as a side or appy! But on this trip I wanted to try something new. Their menu has many options, it can almost be a bit overwhelming the choices and if you walk in having no idea what you feel like, you may be glancing for sometime to make a decision. I opted to try the Lite Size (they have a lager order option) R' Billy Chicken for $17.99. The menu describes it as "A boneless chicken breast char-broiled to perfection then topped with jumbo sea scallops, tiger prawns & finished with a Bernaise sauce." It was a very good sized meal and I would probably never attempt the dinner size option. It started with a caeser salad (option of soup or salad to start) which was very fresh but I needed some more 'zing' to it, the dressing was very mild and I spiced it up with a couple squeezes of lemon but it also needed some garlic! When the main course came it looked very appealing, a creamy yellow sauce over the chicken, scallops and prawns which sat nicely on a bed of rice. To the side was a small pile of spaghetti squash with some peas on top and a very large baked potato that had garlic mash whipped inside and smothered in dark gravy. The rice, seafood and Bernaise sauce was delicious. I didn't know what I wanted more of as they were cooked to perfection and the scallops melted in my mouth. The chicken was a bit bland and maybe cooked a bit too much but I buried each bite with rice and sauce. The potato (you will have option on how you would like this side) I decided to have just as they offered it, mashed and back in its skin to bake and gravy on top. If you are not a huge fan of all gravies, I would suggest asking for the gravy on the side, it may be an acquired taste, it wasn't to my liking. The potato it self was half mashed and half chunky so I only ate the top half and it was quite good, although I think they forgot about the garlic again and the bottom half was left as it was too hard and not tasty.
Over all the experience was good. The meal portion was more then enough and the food I would rate in the middle somewhere, nothing fantastic but nothing too disappointing. The restaurant itself was very clean and service was very fast and friendly. A good place to go for a beer and some appies.

The Phantom Foodie?

If you are at all like me you sometimes struggle to pick a place to dine. You may always stick to "the usual", maybe not your favorite place, but you know that the food, service and atmosphere will be okay. Well I am here to help the best I can, by going to places for you and giving you a heads up on what to expect. Everyone craves something different and I hope to open your eyes on maybe a few places you haven't been to or haven't visited in sometime. For myself I enjoy the experience of dinning out because it means I don't have to cook or clean, and it usually means I get to visit and laugh with friends and family. So I hope you enjoy my dining experiences, and to remind you these are strictly my opinions and you can take them or leave them! Happy eats where ever you may go!
